According to Hindu mythology, it says that on this day goddess durga killed the demon mahishasura and remove the earth from evil. So we can say that, this festival signifies the victory of the power of good over that of the power of evil. Dussehra is celebrated for ten days. In this ten days, ten character of Devi Durga is worshipped on different day. First day Maa Shailputri, second day maa Brahamcharini, third day maa Chandraghanta, fourth day Maa kushmanda, fifth day Maa skandmata, sixth day Maa katyayni, seventh day Maa kalratri, eighth day Maa mahagauri and ninth day Maa sidhidatri are worshipped.
According to other Hindu mythology, it says that lord Ram fought and killed demon king Ravana on this day. Therefor effigy of Ravana is burnt at many places. It also shows the victory of light over dark. The fight between Ram and Ravana were fought for ten days, therefor Dussehra is celebrated for ten days. At many places Ram Leela is performed for ten days.
Dussehra carries a lot of importance in the Hindu religion. Dussehra teaches us that good always wins over evil.
